Fort Pierce Attractions for Vacationers to Keep in Mind
Published by admin November 16th, 2009 in Florida Cities - What 2 SeeHow about some fun in the sun in casual, friendly Fort Pierce Florida? This town is one of the most scenic and relaxing vacation destinations in the Sunshine State. We like the fact that there are a lot of great attractions for both adults and kids to enjoy.
Fort Pierce attractions can be found right along the fully restored Main Street in the downtown area. The stores and shops that line the street give it a "bohemian chic" atmosphere. There are lots of small flower gardens and trees that line this downtown street and I know that you and your family will enjoy stretching your legs and strolling about this totally "fun" community. You can find lots of cafes, clothing stores and yes, even some stores selling novelty toys and souvenirs.
Perhaps you and your family would like to start out with the Seven Gables Visitor Information Center that is located on North Indian River Drive. You will be able to get dozens of brochures about all the Fort Pierce attractions with one easy stop.
Peter P. Cobb Building
This is the place where you can wander about the historical Peter P. Cobb Building that houses the Information Center, as well as some retail shops including a marine and hardware store. This structure was established around 1875 and it gained prominence quickly because it was one of the very first trading posts for Florida's Treasure Coast. At that time this inland road was called the "Cracker Trail". The Cobb Building has an exterior composed of local cypress wood.
The Peter P. Cobb building is a truly beautiful and unique architectural landmark that is very representative of the style once known as "Florida Cracker".
Indian Hills Golf Course
You may want to check out Indian Hills Golf Course which has been a big draw for Fort Pierce residents and visitors for over 70 years. This course was originally laid out and designed by Herbert Strong and provides some outstanding challenges for any level of golfing enthusiast. The convenient location makes it possible for you to sandwich 9-18 holes of golf in between some of your family's sight seeing and beach adventures. Rental equipment is always available and there is a pro shop on site where you can sign up for lessons tailored for your age and golfing level.
The Fort Pierce Sunrise Theatre
Fort Pierce is also home to the Sunrise Theatre that was built in 1923 for vaudeville entertainment. Today it has been renovated and restored with care and is a 1200 seat theatre that the city uses to host a wide variety of shows and performing arts.
Meet the Manatees
The Manatee Observation and Education Center is also located on the main drag, which is otherwise known as North Indian River Drive, and it open throughout the year. You just have to love these gentle, intelligent ocean mammals.
Visitors can come here 6 days a week and browse through the exhibits and gift shop. If you visit during the winter season you are treated to the sight of huge, gentle Manatees that spend the colder months in the warmer waters of Moore's Creek which adjoins the Center.
Art for the Heart
Is there an art lover in your vacation group? If so then you should make a quick stop at the Backus Gallery. This is where many paintings by Bean Backus are on display. He is widely regarded as one of the premiere landscape artists in the southeastern US and he specializes in bringing the beauty of Florida's outdoor scenery to canvas. Did I remember to tell you that this "cool" little art gallery sits right on the water? What a bonus! After you tour Bean's shop you can grab a sandwich and enjoy dining al fresco at the nearby Corner Café.
See Marvelous Botanical Specimens
The Heathcote Botanical Gardens are another of the wonderful Fort Pierce attractions that you can see while you are on vacation. This is a living museum that is full of botanical treasures for everyone to enjoy. Hundreds of colorful plants and trees can be viewed here. There is a meticulously designed Japanese Garden and many rare plant species that are sure to delight everyone in your group.
