Art Basel is back in town…

Published November 16th, 2007 in Florida Cities - What 2 See

In less than a month, one of the most talked about art festivals comes to Miami.  Yes, Art Basel Miami Beach is almost here.  This December, the 6th annual show is back, and it's the best time to enjoy Miami Beach.  The few times in the year that you'll experience a less than sweltering Miami is during December.

I have no doubt that this year's festival will out do last year's. They're expecting over 40,000 art lovers to come appreciate the more than 200 galleries in this year's show.  This year boasts galleries from Asia, Latin America, and even one from Africa.  Art Basel is definitely an experience that you won't want to miss.

If you've never been to Miami Beach in the winter, or what Miamians refer to as winter, you don't know what you're missing.  It's a completely different experience than summertime.  Winter is high tourist season in Miami, and oddly enough, the beaches won't be as crowded as you think they would be.  Why? Pretty simple.  If you've been raised in a city where it gets cold about 5 days out of the year, you're not going anywhere near the water come December.  Mind you, cold in Miami is anything between 60-70 degrees.  We start pulling out our sweaters anytime we hear "lows in the 70s."  Lower than that, and we don't leave our houses.

What's even better about South Beach in December is being able to enjoy a delicious lunch at any of the dozen of side walk cafes and restaurants that line Ocean Drive.  As the sun goes down, the breeze starts to pick up…that's the perfect moment to order up an espresso and slowly sip it as you watch the art-deco hotels start to light up the night sky.
